PTSD – A Self-Help Survival Guide (Full Book PDF)

PTSD – A Self-Help Survival Guide book cover by Stuart Welbourn
Back in 2011, I published this book for veterans dealing with PTSD. The print run’s long gone, but I didn’t want it to disappear into history — so here it is in PDF form.

About the Book

Back in 2011, I put this book out because I was sick of all the psychobabble and glossy brochures that didn’t actually help anyone. Veterans needed something useful — not a lecture, not a diagnosis, just a survival guide that spoke the same language.
It’s part practical tools, part gallows humour. Some bits might make you laugh, some bits might make you wince. A few people will probably find it offensive. That’s fine — it wasn’t written for them.
The first edition finally came off the shelves this year, but I didn’t want it disappearing into the ether. So here it is, exactly as it was — rough edges and all. And while this PDF keeps the first edition alive, I’m also working on a second edition that’ll reach a wider audience, but still keep the same straight-talking heart.

What’s inside

  • PTSD without the bullshit — what it is, what it isn’t, and why the label isn’t the end of the world.
  • Flashbacks, nightmares, and sleep — the grim stuff nobody volunteers for, plus a few ways to wrestle back some control.
  • Triggers — because sooner or later something sets you off. Here’s how to spot them, and what to do when they do.
  • Anger, guilt, shame — the emotional baggage that sneaks in with PTSD, and how to stop it running the show.
  • Dark patches and low moods — ways to get through them without sinking the whole ship.
  • Relationships — because let’s face it, PTSD doesn’t just mess with your head, it leaks into everyone else’s life too.
  • Practical tools you can use today — including tapping (EFT). No mystic hand-waving — just a technique you can actually use when the noise won’t shut up.
  • Other therapies that might help — straight talk on what’s out there, and when to give something a shot.
  • When to call in backup — knowing the difference between a rough patch you can ride out and the point where you actually need to talk to a doc, a therapist, or whoever’s qualified to step in.
It’s not a magic cure. But if you pick up even one or two tools that make the bad days easier, that’s a win. That’s the whole point.

Who It’s For

If you’ve served and PTSD’s left its mark, this book was written with you in mind. It’s for the oppo who wants something to grab hold of on the rough days, and for families or partners who’d like a clearer idea of what’s going on behind the eyes when words don’t come easily.

Who it’s Not For

If you’re after a polished textbook, this isn’t it. If dark humour or blunt language makes you clutch your pearls, best move along. And if you’re looking for a magic fix, you won’t find it here either.
